Inspired by the poem "Warning" by Jenny Joesph that begins "When I am an old woman, I shall wear purple with a red hat..." the Red Hat Society is a women's "disorganization" based on the concept that growing old can be fun and frivolous.

There's Fun After 50...
The Red Hat Society was started as a group for women over 50 who enjoy dressing in purple outfits and red hats. Our younger sisters, who have yet to turn 50, are affectionately called Pink Hatters and dress in lavender outfits and pink hats. Together we celebrate the joys of aging gracefully - playfully.

The Red Hat Mission
The Red Hat Society began as a result of a few women deciding to greet middle age with verve, humor and élan. We believe silliness is the comedy of life, and since we are all in it together, we might as well join red-gloved hands and go for the gusto together. Underneath the frivolity, we share a bond of affection forged by common life experience and a geniune enthusiasm for wherever life takes us next.

What We Do...
The standard answer to the question, "What do you do?" is as follows: Nothing. We feel like we have all been so dutiful and so "busy" for so long that we deserve a break. The Red Hat Society was founded as a haven for silliness and unfettered happiness among women of a certain age.

There are not "rules" or bylaws of chapter organization. Each chapter structures itself according to the wishes and whims of its members, and the women choose "offices" for themselves as they see fit. The founder of the chapter is referred to as its "Queen Mother".

We are largely an online community, forming bonds between Red Hat sisters everywhere via computer. Although it is not necessary to own a computer in order to participate, it sure can be a lot more fun!

Let the Fun Begin!
To join a chapter in your area, use the online chapter search at www.redhatsociety.com. If you do not have a User Name and Password, go to the home page. At the top of the page you will see a number of red tabs. Click on the tab "Chapter Search". This will take you to the search page. If you do have a User Name and Password, log in on the Red Hat Society home page. Under the area titled "Registered Purple Perks" link. This will take you to the search page. You can search for a chapter three ways: by zip code, by state or by country. If you wish to contact a chpater that is open to new members, simply click on the "Contact this Chapter" link.

If you cannot find an open chapter in your area, it's not hard to start your own. Simply gather together a group of friends who are ready to have some fun, grab some red hats and purple outfits and get started! To register your chapter, go to www.redhatsociety.com and click the "Chapter Registration" link on the home page. The details of registration and a registration form are available right there online.

Pink-Hatted Postulates
While most Red Hat Society members are over 50, we welcome junior members to join in the fun. Pink Hatters don lavender clothing and pink hats until The Birthday, when their 50th birthday is marked with a "Reduation" ceremony. Oftentimes, chapters consist of both Red and Pink Hatters and there are even Pink Hat chapters!
